An Analysis of Worker Drug Use and Workplace Policies and Programs |
||||||||||||
A special set of questions that was included in the 1994 NHSDA was designed to determine whether the respondent worked for a large or a small business. The questions were phrased:
"About how many people work for your employer at all locations?" By location, we mean all the offices, stores, etc., regardless or their geographic location, of a certain company."
"Thinking about the location where you work, about how many people work for your employer out of this office, store, etc.?"
The five response categories for these questions were less than 10 people, 10-24 people, 25-99 people, 100-499 people, and 500 people or more. A preliminary assessment of these categories indicated that there was little difference in reported drug use among those workers from establishments with 25-499 employees. The key differences were among the following three groups: 1-24 employees, 25-499 employees, and 500 or more employees. Therefore, these three categories are used in the analyses. As indicated in Chapter 3, the second question about workplace size is labeled establishment size and is used in this report. Appendix Table B-1 provides a comparison of drug use rates among workers grouped into five establishment size categories and three establishment size categories.
