1.4 Overview of Chapter Contents

The following chapters provide greater detail about several issues involving worker drug use and workplace policies and programs directed at drug and alcohol use. Chapter 2 presents the percentage of workers, age 18-49, who reported current illicit drug and heavy alcohol use by age, gender, race/ethnicity, and personal income. Chapters 3 and 4 provide similar information on current illicit drug and heavy alcohol use by establishment size and by occupation. Chapter 5 addresses employee reports of workplace policies and programs concerning drug and alcohol use, and whether they are more or less prevalent among workers who report current illicit drug use compared to those who report no use. Chapter 6 is directed at employees’ reports of workplace drug testing and presents information on distributions by type of testing program, establishment size, occupation, and current illicit drug use. Chapter 7 summarizes several important results, discusses limitations of the analysis, and offers directions for future research. Finally, appendices A, B, and C contain detailed tables,selected questionnaire items used to derive data for this report, and bibliographical references, respectively.
