Figure 5.18 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past year dependence or abuse for any illicit drug or alcohol among youths aged 12 to 17, by State, for 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (9.23 to 10.64 percent) were Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Washington. States in the next highest group (8.41 to 9.22 percent) were Alabama, Arkansas, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and Wisconsin. States in the mid group (7.81 to 8.40 percent) were Alaska, Arizona, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Wyoming. States in the next lowest group (6.90 to 7.80 percent) were California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Ohio, South Carolina, and West Virginia. States in the lowest group (5.87 to 6.89 percent) were District of Columbia, Georgia, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Virginia.
