Figure 4.12 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting perceptions of great risk of smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day among persons aged 26 or older, by State, for 1999 and 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (71.47 to 76.01 percent) were Arizona, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, and Vermont. States in the next highest group (69.33 to 71.46 percent) were Alabama, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, and South Carolina. States in the mid group (67.79 to 69.32 percent) were Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington. States in the next lowest group (65.85 to 67.78 percent) were Alaska, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. States in the lowest group (62.30 to 65.84 percent) were Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and West Virginia.
