Figure 4.3 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past month use of any tobacco product among persons aged 18 to 25, by State, for 1999 and 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (49.62 to 55.11 percent) were Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. States in the next highest group (48.25 to 49.61 percent) were Colorado, Indiana, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. States in the mid group (44.58 to 48.24 percent) were Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Vermont. States in the next lowest group (40.16 to 44.57 percent) were Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Virginia. States in the lowest group (27.48 to 40.15 percent) were California, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, New York, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, and Washington.
