Figure 4.1 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past month use of any tobacco product among persons aged 12 or older, by State, for 1999 and 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (33.05 to 39.08 percent) were Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and West Virginia. States in the next highest group (31.77 to 33.04 percent) were Alaska, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, and Wyoming. States in the mid group (30.13 to 31.76 percent) were Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. States in the next lowest group (27.71 to 30.12 percent) were Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Maine, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, and Washington. States in the lowest group (19.86 to 27.70 percent) were California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Utah, and Virginia.
