Figure 3.4 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past month use of alcohol among persons aged 26 or older, by State, for 1999 and 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (55.90 to 63.35 percent) were Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Vermont, and Wisconsin. States in the next highest group (52.12 to 55.89 percent) were Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wyoming. States in the mid group (48.41 to 52.11 percent) were Arizona, California, Florida, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Washington. States in the next lowest group (37.70 to 48.40 percent) were District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, Ohio, Texas, and Virginia. States in the lowest group (29.75 to 37.69 percent) were Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, and West Virginia.
