Figure 2.9 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting perceptions of great risk of smoking marijuana once a month among persons aged 12 or older, by State, for 1999 and 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (47.63 to 54.70 percent) were Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia. States in the next highest group (44.49 to 47.62 percent) were Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, and Utah. States in the mid group (41.31 to 44.48 percent) were District of Columbia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, and Virginia. States in the next lowest group (38.21 to 41.30 percent) were California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming. States in the lowest group (29.62 to 38.20 percent) were Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.
