Figure 5.16 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past year any illicit drug dependence among persons aged 26 or older, by State, for 2000 and 2001. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (1.02 to 1.47 percent) were Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Nevada, Vermont, and Washington. States in the next highest group (0.82 to 1.01 percent) were Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, and Tennessee. States in the mid group (0.70 to 0.81 percent) were Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. States in the next lowest group (0.59 to 0.69 percent) were Alaska, Idaho, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah. States in the lowest group (0.41 to 0.58 percent) were Alabama, Iowa, Missouri, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
