Figure 5.12 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past year any illicit drug dependence or abuse among persons aged 26 or older, by State, for 2000 and 2001. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (1.43 to 1.86 percent) were Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Nevada, New York, Vermont, and Washington. States in the next highest group (1.24 to 1.42 percent) were Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Tennessee. States in the mid group (1.05 to 1.23 percent) were Alaska, Georgia, Kansas, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Utah, and West Virginia. States in the next lowest group (0.90 to 1.04 percent) were Alabama, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Wisconsin. States in the lowest group (0.61 to 0.89 percent) were Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Virginia, and Wyoming.
