Figure 4.9 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting perceptions of great risk of smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day among persons aged 12 or older, by State, for 2000 and 2001. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (71.26 to 76.27 percent) were Arizona, California, District of Columbia, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. States in the next highest group (69.20 to 71.25 percent) were Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Montana, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, and Virginia. States in the mid group (68.25 to 69.19 percent) were Alabama, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. States in the next lowest group (66.96 to 68.24 percent) were Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. States in the lowest group (64.77 to 66.95 percent) were Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
