Figure 3.4 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past month use of alcohol among persons aged 26 or older, by State, for 2000 and 2001. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (57.33 to 65.67 percent) were Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin. States in the next highest group (53.73 to 57.32 percent) were Alaska, Arizona, Illinois, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, South Dakota, and Wyoming. States in the mid group (50.13 to 53.72 percent) were California, District of Columbia, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington. States in the next lowest group (42.01 to 50.12 percent) were Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Texas, and Virginia. States in the lowest group (31.74 to 42.00 percent) were Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, and West Virginia.
