Patterns of Mental Health Service Utilization and Substance Use Among Adults, 2000 and 2001

Figure 4.4 shows 4 pie charts with the percentages of out-of-pocket costs in the past year for outpatient mental health treatment locations. The first chart shows that among adults who received mental health treatment at an outpatient mental health center, 42.1 percent spent $101 to $500 out-of-pocket, 32.4 percent spent less than $100, 6.6 percent spent over $2,000, and 19.0 percent spent $501 to $2,000. The second chart shows that among adults receiving treatment at a doctor's office, 39.4 percent spent $101 to $500, 44.5 percent spent less than $100, 4.1 percent spent more than $2,000, and 12.0 percent spent $501 to $2,000. The third chart shows that among adults who received treatment at a private therapist's office, 29.9 percent spent $501 to $2,000, 41.3 percent spent $101 to $500, 18.0 percent spent less than $100, and 10.7 percent spent more than $2,000. The fourth pie chart shows that among all adults receiving outpatient mental health treatment, 39.7 percent spent $101 to $500, 27.3 percent spent less than $100, 8.6 percent spent more than $2,000, and 24.4 percent spent $501 to $2,000 in out-of-pocket costs in the past year.
