Chapter 2's Figure 6 is a line and marker chart plotting the percentages of records with prior substance abuse treatment episodes by age in the Alcohol and Drug Services Study (ADSS) sample using weighted data. The graph shows four lines to depict (a) zero prior treatment episodes, (b) one prior episode, (c) two prior treatment episodes, and (d) three prior episodes. Prior to age 65, between 40 and 60 percent at each age were entering treatment for the first time. About 20 percent had one prior treatment episode, 10 percent had two or more episodes, and 5 percent had three prior treatment episodes. (As noted in the chapter, the age groups older than 60 cannot be considered stable because they were based on too small a sample.)
