4.3 Current Heavy Alcohol Use and Workplace Information, Policies, and Programs

• In 1997, the percentage of full-time workers at small establishments, age 18-49, reporting that their workplace provided access to EAPs was significantly higher among those who were not current heavy alcohol users than among those who were current heavy alcohol users (28% vs. 16%). The 1994 data showed similar results.

 
• Unlike in 1994, the 1997 NHSDA did not show significant differences between current heavy alcohol users and those who were not current heavy alcohol users in whether they reported that their workplace provided information about drug or alcohol use.

 
• In 1997, proportionately fewer full-time workers at large workplaces (500 or more employees), reported workplace employee assistance programs than in 1994 (75% vs. 82%).

 
• In 1997, proportionately more heavy drinking full-time workers at medium sized workplaces (25 to 499 employees), reported that their workplaces had a written policy about drug or alcohol use in 1997 than in 1994 (87% vs. 77%).
