Figure 3.1 is titled "Age- and Gender-Adjusted Discharge Rates, by Subgroup, 1990 to 1995." It is a graph that shows the trends in age- and gender-adjusted discharge rates of those with substance use and mental disorder diagnoses and medical diagnoses from community hospitals. It shows these rates for five subgroups of discharges: those with substance use disorder diagnoses only, those with both substance use and mental disorder diagnoses, those with both substance use disorder and medical diagnoses, those with mental disorder diagnoses only, and those with both mental disorder and medical diagnoses. The largest change was among those with both substance use and mental disorder diagnoses. Between 1990 and 1995, their discharge rate increased from 9.4 to 17.2 per 10,000 population. The discharge rate of those with both mental disorder and medical diagnoses increased from 19.3 to 22.5 per 10,000 population. It increased from 7.5 to 8.5 for those with both substance use disorder and medical diagnoses, and from 5.8 to 6.7 for those with only a substance use disorder diagnosis. The rate declined slightly for those with only a mental disorder diagnosis, from 14.0 to 11.8 per 10,000 population.
