Figure 4.6 is a U.S. map showing cigarette use in past month among youths aged 12 to 17, by State: percentages, annual averages based on 2002 and 2003 NSDUHs. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (15.02 to 19.79 percent) were Arkansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. States in the next highest group (14.08 to 15.01 percent) were Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. States in the mid group (12.84 to 14.07 percent) were Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. States in the next lowest group (11.82 to 12.83 percent) were Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Maine, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Carolina, and Wyoming. States in the lowest group (6.57 to 11.81 percent) were California, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Washington.
