Tobacco Use, Income, and Educational Level

The NHSDA Report:  Tobacco Use, Income, and Educational Level

Highlights:

  • Tobacco products include cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco (i.e., chewing tobacco or snuff), and pipe tobacco. 
  • In 1999 and 2000, past month use of most tobacco products was more common among persons from families with lower incomes than among persons from families with higher incomes. 
  • Rates of past month use of most tobacco products were higher among persons with lower levels of education than among those with higher levels of education.
  • Past month cigarette use was lowest at all income levels among persons who had completed college.

This Short Report, The NHSDA Report:  Tobacco Use, Income, and Educational Level,  is based on SAMHSA's  National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), now called the  National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).  The survey is conducted by the Office of Applied Studies (OAS) in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse and for selected mental health measures in the general U.S. civilian non institutionalized population, age 12 and older.   SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use & Health also provides estimates for drug use and for selected mental health measures by State.
